The Cover 3 Sports Ticker highlights pivotal matchups in the Games of the Week, and provides updates on local athletes in the Local Stars and Pajaro Valley Little League sections.

Games of the Week

  1. St. Francis vs. Carmel, baseball, Friday at 4pm: The No. 4 seeded Sharks (22-6), winners of the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division, will play the No. 3 Padres (19-10) in the Central Coast Section Division IV finals at Excite Ballpark in San Jose.
  2. CIF Championships, track and field, Friday and Saturday: Aptos High senior Elizabeth Churchill and Monte Vista Christian senior Clayton King will compete at this weekend’s CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
  3. PVLL playoffs, youth baseball, Tuesday at 5:15pm: A pair of Pajaro Valley Little League teams will square off at Ruso Field for a chance to advance to this year’s championship game.

  • Aptos High senior Elizabeth Churchill tied the school record in winning the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 9 inches and she placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.18 seconds at the CCS Track and Field Championships on May 21. Both marks earned her a trip to this weekend’s CIF State Championships in Clovis.
  • Monte Vista Christian senior Clayton King placed second in the discus with a throw of 150-8 at the CCS Track and Field Championships on May 21. His mark was good enough to earn a berth to this weekend’s CIF State Championships in Clovis.
  • Archbishop Mitty freshman Evangeline Marheineke, a Santa Cruz resident, placed fourth in the 3,200 in a school-record 10:46.44 at the CCS Track and Field Championships on May 21.
  • St. Francis High senior Julian Vargas placed fourth in the 3,200 in 9:15.45 at the CCS Track and Field Championships on May 21.

Pajaro Valley Little League

No. 1 Nationals 18, No. 4 Rockies 7: Kenny Allen had a double, two triples, two RBIs and scored three runs for the top-seeded Nationals in their playoff win May 21. Ryker Fitz had three singles, two RBIs and scored four runs for the Nationals, and fellow teammate Tyler Brooks had one single, one double, a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored. Jared Verdia had a home run and two RBIs for the Nationals, and fellow teammate Sunny Magana finished with a double. Chris Sigala had a pair of singles for the Rockies, and fellow teammate Andy Jarquin finished with one single and two RBIs.

No. 2 Twins 15, No. 5 Athletics 1: Benjamin Rose finished with a pair of singles and scored three runs for the Twins in their playoff win May 21. Jacob Nielsen finished with a pair of singles, Angelo Diaz had three singles, J.J. Martinez had one single and two doubles, Mason Boorman scored three runs and Freddie Guzman had a double and two RBIs for the Twins. Jakari Freeman finished with one single and scored one run for the Athletics. 

No. 3 Giants 10, No. 2 Twins 3: Angelo Urabe-Chavez had three singles and scored three runs for the Giants in their playoff win May 18. Nico Galvan had one double for the Giants, and fellow teammates Mauricio Estrada and Roman Magana each had two singles. Nate Arias finished with one home and two RBIs for the Giants. J.J. Martinez had one single, one double and one home run for the Twins.

No. 4 Rockies 14, No. 5 Athletics 5: Chris Sigala finished with one double and one triple for the Rockies in their playoff win May 17. Isaiah Lopez scored three runs for the Rockies, and fellow teammate Aaron Martinez finished with one single and two doubles. Eduardo Castaneda and Brody Barto each had a pair of base hits for the Rockies. Justin Curiel finished with a pair of base hits for the Athletics. 

Rockies 6, Giants 5: Chris Sigala had two triples for the Rockies (7-9) in their win May 14. Fellow teammates Aaron Martinez had a single and a double and Joziah Abrego had a triple. Angelo Urabe-Chavez had a single and a triple for the Giants (8-8), and fellow teammate Deegan Cawaling finished with a double.

Nationals 18, Athletics 11: Ryker Fitz had a triple and Kenny Allen had two singles for the Nationals (14-2) in their win May 14. Israel Hernandez had a single and double with four RBIs for the Athletics (0-16), and fellow teammate Justin Curiel finished with a double.

Rockies 17, Twins  4: Eduardo Castaneda had two singles, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored for the Rockies in their win May 13. Fellow teammates Chris Sigala scored three runs and Aaron Martinez finished with two singles, a double and three RBIs. J.J. Martinez finished with a pair of singles for the Twins (11-5). 

Twins 13, Nationals 3: Shane McCoy had two home runs and four RBIs for the Twins in their win May 10. Fellow teammates J.J. Martinez and Isaiah Espinoza each finished with a double. Ryker Fitz had a triple for the Nationals, and fellow teammates Kenny Allen and Tyler Brooks each finished with a double.

Giants 16, Athletics 0: Angelo Urabe-Chavez finished with a single, a triple and a pair of RBIs for the Giants in their win May 9. Fellow teammates Nico Walter finished with a triple and Mauricio Estrada scored three runs. Bryce Ruiz and Nico Galvan eached finished with a single, a double and two RBIs for the Giants. Eli Salgado, Israel Hernandez and Aaliyah Arellano each had a single for the Athletics.
