Watsonville’s Layla Ruiz won the 400-, 1,600- and 3,200-meters in the Wildcatz’s Monterey Bay League Pacific division dual meet win over Gilroy on Thursday.

Ruiz, a freshman, recorded winning times of 1 minute, 3.13 seconds, 5:27.92 and 12:20.02, respectively.

Watsonville’s Jackie Barocio notched wins in the long jump and triple jump with leaps of 14 feet, 8 1/2 inches and 32-2, respectively. She also took second in the high jump (4-2) and the 100 hurdles (19.39).

Her teammate Daniela Salazar won the 800 (2:48.49) and was second in the 400 (1:05.5) and 1,600 (5:45.79).

Pajaro Valley’s Jayleen Solorzano won the 200 (28.7), was second in the 100 (13.86) and third in the triple jump (27-4).

Fellow Grizzly, Sofia Nolasco, won the discus and was second in the shot put (28-1).

• Aptos picks up 3 wins – Aptos beat Santa Cruz, Harbor and Mt. Madonna in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League dual meets on Thursday.

Brynn Mitchell and Marea Zlatunich were double winners for the Mariners. Mitchell won the long jump (16-4) and triple jump (34-9.5), and Zlatunich won the 1,600 (5:14.86) and 800 (2:30.61).

Kaela Hemingway, a freshman, won the 100 (13.31) and was second in the 200 (27.52).

Mt. Madonna’s Paola Jacobs won the shot put (28-4.5) and placed second in the high jump (4-8).

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

• Llamas wins 2 – Rolando Llamas won shot put (39-10) and discus (112-9) in Watsonville’s MBL-Pacific division dual meet win over Gilroy on Thursday.

Miguel Leon also won two events, placing first in the 800 (2:09.66) and 3,200 (11:12.43).

• Mariners dominate – Aptos produced five double winners in Thursday evening’s SCCAL dual meet wins over Santa Cruz, Harbor and Mt. Madonna.

Alex Austen won the shot put (45-4) and discus (125-6). Jordan Kadlacek was first in the triple jump (41-2) and high jump (6-0). Hunter Matys took home victories in the long jump (20-9) and 100 (11.75). Jackson Schenone raced to wins in the 1,600 (4:34.2) and 800 (2:09.44). Owen Mastropietro crossed the finish line first in the 110 (16.33) and 300 hurdles (43.03).

HS SOFTBALL

• Watsonville 5, Monterey 0 – Jessica Rodriguez tossed another shutout in Watsonville’s MBL-Gabilan division win on Thursday.

Rodriguez allowed only three hits and struck out 11 in the circle, and also knocked in a run with the bat.

Anastacia Alba hit her second home run of the season and also tripled, while Maya Guerrero smacked a pair of doubles. Juliana Wilson also doubled.

Watsonville (6-0, 2-0) hosts its tournament today starting at 9 a.m.

• SLV 6, St. Francis 2 – Claire Cagnacci was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI in St. Francis’ SCCAL loss on Thursday evening.

Shelby Velasco struck out seven in the circle.

St. Francis (1-4, 1-2) travels to Saratoga today at 11 a.m.

• MVC 5, Christopher 3 – Tom Avila battled through six innings to lead Monte Vista Christian to a MBL-Gabilan division win on Thursday.

Avila allowed five hits and only one earned run. Matthew Sanders notched the save.

Garret Laine and Jason Bettencourt each hit a double. Harrison Zishcke had two RBIs, and Tyler Keenan went 3-for-4 with a scored run.

M.V.C. (7-7, 3-5) hosts Archbishop Mitty on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

HS VOLLEYBALL

• Gilroy 3, MVC 1 – Riland Wagner had 15 kills, 10 assists and four aces and J.P. Thrasher added 12 kills, 14 assists and three aces in Monte Vista Christian’s MBL-Pacific division loss on Thursday.

Tanner Batt added 10 kills and Jeric Baladad chipped in 17 digs and three aces for M.V.C. (7-6, 3-3), which is off until April 10 when it will host Scotts Valley.

• Aptos 3, Soquel 0 – Kacey Losik had five digs, 11 kills, 20 assists and four blocks, Jordan Notari added 10 digs and 13 kills and Aptos cruised to an SCCAL win on Wednesday.

Noah Eitzen chipped in six kills and five blocks. Michael Spinelli made 17 assists and Christian Segura notched 11 digs.

• Mt. Madonna 3, Scotts Valley 0 – Brigg Busenhart had 13 kills and 12 aces, John Dias finished with seven kills and Mt. Madonna swept Scotts Valley on Wednesday night in SCCAL action.

• Carmel 4, MVC 3 – Ken Hoang won his No. 4 singles match for Monte Vista Christian on Thursday in MBL-Gabilan division play.

GIRLS SWIMMING

• Aptos 115, Harbor 44 – Mia Alonso, Kristin Malone and Maddie McBride were all double winners for Aptos in its SCCAL meet against Harbor on Thursday.

Alonso won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly in 2:15.9 and 1:08.26, respectively. Malone won the 200 individual medley (2:30.5) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.72). McBride had wins in the 50 free (25.72) and 100 free (1:00.88).

• Aptos 116, Harbor 14 – Ian McGuckin and Alex Estrada both notched double wins for Aptos in its SCCAL win over Harbor on Thursday.

McGukin won the 200 IM (2:15.51) and 100 free (54.45) and Estrada won the 100 fly (57.71) and 100 backstroke (1:00.86).

• Cabrillo 7, CCSF 1 – Kai Moody was 2-for-5 with two runs and a triple in Cabrillo College’s non-conference win on Thursday.

Jake Keaschall had three hits, including a double, an RBI and a scored run. Ryan Juncker went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Cabrillo (10-16) had 14 hits in total.

The Seahawks travel to Ohlone College on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

HS BASKETBALL

• All-Star game releases rosters – Fifteen locals were selected for the upcoming 11th Annual Steinbeck Rotary All-Star Basketball game.

The game, which pits the top graduating seniors from the Tri-County (Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey), is scheduled for Friday at Alvarez High. The girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.

On the girls side, Watsonville’s Savanah Quintana, Evelyn Rios and Julisa Vega, St. Francis’s Chloe Deleissegues and Janiya Sevilla, North Monterey County’s Jocelyn Cazarez, Aptos’s Abbi Saxton and Monte Vista Christian’s Lauren De Los Santos will play for the North team coached by Pacific Collegiate’s Daniel Kumasaka.

On the boys side, St. Francis’s Jason Gallo and Chase Watkins, Pajaro Valley’s Ryan Magbag and Tony Reyes, Aptos’ Blake Welle, Monte Vista Christian’s Lucas Schmidt and Watsonville’s Noel Magana will play for the North team coached by Santa Cruz’s Lawan Millhouse.
