The No. 7-seeded Mt. Madonna Hawks beat No. 10-seeded Sacred Heart Cathedral, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-22 on Tuesday in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs.

Brigg Busenhart had 23 kills, Zac Clark added 17 kills and Zac Wagner made 55 assists for Mt. Madonna (19-12), which advances to play at No. 2 Branham High today at 7 p.m.

HS BASEBALL

• Watsonville 3, North Salinas 2 – The Watsonville high Wildcatz edged the North Salinas High Vikings 3-2 on Monday in Monterey Bay League Pacific division action.

Maximilian Ramirez IV picked up the win, tossing 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball while striking out six batters. He allowed only one earned run.

Gio Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with a double, two scored runs and an RBI. James Gomez Jr. was 2-for-4 with a double.

Watsonville (17-8, 13-4) finishes off its regular season on Friday at home against North Salinas High at 7 p.m.

• Santa Cruz 5, Aptos 4 – The Aptos High Mariners lost 5-4 to the Santa Cruz High Cardinals on Tuesday in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play.

Forrest Hays was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a scored run. Jake Keaschall was 2-for-3 with two scored runs. Tate Stone-Hinds finished 2-for-4. Will Murphy doubled.

David Reckers took the loss after five innings of four-hit ball. Reckers had seven strikeouts.

HS SOFTBALL

• St. Francis 10, Aptos 2 – The St. Francis High Sharks blasted the Aptos High Mariners 10-2 on Tuesday in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action.

Miranda Janisch pitched a complete game, allowing only six hits, five walks and no earned runs while striking out seven.

Ariana Azevedo was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three scored runs and an RBI. Shelby Velasco went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three scored runs. Jocie Torres was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and one run. Anna Noto drove in four runs.

St. Francis (9-16, 3-8) closes out its season today at 4:30 p.m. against Harbor High.

CCS SWIMMING

• Clarke ranked in top 15 – Aptos High junior Spencer Clarke will enter Friday’s Central Coast Section Swimming and Diving Championships as the No. 12 ranked swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley and the No. 13 ranked swimmer in the 500 freestyle.

Clarke set his time of 1 minute, 57.12 seconds in the 200 IM as he cruised to the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championship in the event at league finals two weeks ago. He also set his time of 4:46.36 in the 500 free at league finals.

His teammate, senior Kathryn Bockman, is ranked 18th in the girl’s 500 free (5:16.38) and 27th in the 200 free (1:59.01).

Aptos also has four other individual swimmers that will compete at CCS: Madi McBride, Ian McGuckin, Nicolas Friedley and Alex Estrada.

The Mariners’ boy’s and girl’s 200 medley relay teams and the boy’s 400 free relay will also compete on Friday.
