Aptos High alumna Nikki Hiltz placed second in her heat of the 1,500-meters to advance to the finals of the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento on Thursday night.

Hiltz, a redshirt junior at the University of Arkansas, completed the race in 4 minutes, 11.24 seconds. It was the sixth fastest time overall.

Hiltz will compete for the 1,500 title today at 2:12 p.m. back at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium.

Watsonville High alumna Brianna Cueva, a former Cal State Northridge Matador, took 11th in the discus with a toss of 171 feet on Thursday.

Cueva was the Big West Champion in both the discus and shot put this season.

LITTLE LEAGUE

• Watsonville American wins – Watsonville American shut out San Lorenzo Valley 4-0 on Thursday in pool A play of the District 39 Little League Majors All-Stars tournament in Santa Cruz.

Watsonville American finished with a 3-1 pool play record and will likely move on to the final four.

Pajaro Valley closes out pool play today at 4 p.m. against San Lorenzo Valley.

Pajaro Valley has yet to win a pool play contest.

• Pajaro Valley suffers loss – Pajaro Valley fell 7-2 to Santa Cruz American in the pool A play of the District 39 Little League 11s All-Stars tournament on Thursday in Scotts Valley.

Pajaro Valley finishes out pool play today against Santa Cruz National at 10 a.m.

Watsonville American and Aptos wrapped up pool play on Friday night. Watsonville American met with Capitola-Soquel and Aptos faced off with Scotts Valley. The results to those games were not available before the time of print.
