Watsonville High alumnus Chris Rivera recorded his second win of his rookie season in the GCL Cardinals’ 12-4 win over the GCL Marlins on July 20.

Rivera, a right-handed pitcher, tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to improve his record to 2-1. He allowed four hits and struck out two.

Rivera also threw 2 1/3 innings on Thursday in the Cardinals’ 8-3 loss against the GCL Nationals. He allowed two hits and an earned run, while striking out three. He lowered his earned run average to 4.15.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

• Valenzuela an all-star – St. Francis High alumnus Sahid Valenzuela was named 2018 Cape Cod League All-Star following a solid first half to his summer baseball season with the Wareham Gateman.

An incoming junior at Cal State Fullerton, Valenzuela posted a .324 batting average with 11 scored runs, 24 hits, five doubles, two homers and 14 RBIs heading into the all-star game.

COLT BASEBALL

• S.C. Red season ends – The Santa Cruz Red baseball team was eliminated from the Colt NorCal Super Regional tournament on Saturday. It lost, 7-6, to the Burlingame Sox in an elimination game.

Dylan Vargas was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a scored run in the season-ending loss. Patrick Sweeney was also 2-for-3. Grant Kolassa tripled, scored and drove in a run.

Champion of the Coast Regional tournament, Red lost its tournament opener, 8-1, against the Los Gatos Legends — the eventual champions of the tournament — before bouncing back with an 8-1 win over San Jose PAL.
