The Monte Vista Christian Mustangs beat the Aptos High Mariners 25-12, 26-24, 22-25, 25-16 in both  teams’ season opener on Thursday night in Aptos.

Several players contributed for the defending Central Coast Section Division IV champion Mustangs in the win. Mattea Romo had 13 kills and 17 digs. Cassidy Schurman added 10 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. Allie Tillery chimed in with nine kills and three blocks. Christine Vea totaled 14 digs.

Madelin Smith finished with 10 kills, 10 digs and eight assists for the CCS Division III finalist Mariners. Cameron Dueck made 11 digs, Payton Dueck had nine digs and three aces, Jillian Rodriguez knocked down seven kills and Dani Hewitt dished out 14 assists.

M.V.C. returns to action on Tuesday at home against Harbor High at 6:30 p.m.

Aptos, meanwhile, travels to play at Salinas High on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

• Watsonville 3, Marina 0 – Jasmine Jimenez had 18 assists, four kills and five aces, Camila Cardenas chipped in 11 kills and the Watsonville High Wildcatz opened their season with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 sweep over Marina High on Thursday at home.

Chely Hernandez made 10 digs and recorded four aces for Watsonville, which plays at Alvarez High on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

• Christopher 3, St. Francis 0 – The St. Francis High Sharks lost their season opener in a sweep to the Christopher High Cougars on Thursday in Watsonville.

St. Francis hosts Kirby Prep on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

• Pajaro Valley 3, PCS 1- The Pajaro Valley High Grizzlies started their season with a 13-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-15 win over the Pacific Collegiate School Pumas on Thursday at home.

Jaqui Lopez led Pajaro Valley with 17 assists, six aces and six kills. Julie Che added eight aces, Natalie Sanchez chimed in with eight kills and Natalia Arroyo and Natalia Gallegos made seven digs apiece.

Pajaro Valley hosts Gonzales High on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
