Mattea Romo had 10 kills, 14 assists and three aces, Abbey Lynch added three aces and six kills and the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs began their Monterey Bay League Gabilan division season with a 25-8, 25-21, 25-15 sweep of Alisal High on Thursday in Salinas.

Allie Tillery added six kills and one block for M.V.C. (4-3, 1-0), which competes in the Harbor Surf City Invitational today and picks MBL-G play back up on Tuesday at home against Christopher High at 6:30 p.m.

• Gilroy 3, Pajaro Valley 1 – The Pajaro Valley High Grizzlies loss their first Monterey Bay League Pacific division match of the season to Gilroy High on Thursday night on the road. The scores were 25-22, 23-25, 27-25, 25-10.

Jaqui Lopez had 17 assists, while Julie Che had five aces, six kills and five digs for the Pajaro Valley (7-3, 0-1), which hosts rival Watsonville High on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

• Santa Cruz 3, Mt. Madonna 1 – Mara Peruzzi had 18 kills and three aces for the Mt. Madonna Hawks in a 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23 loss to Santa Cruz High on Thursday in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action.

Peruzzi also had seven digs, four blocks and had three aces, while Indigo Kelly produced 41 assists and Paola Jacobs finished with 15 kills, nine digs and one block.

Mt. Madonna (3-1, 1-1) continues its league season on Tuesday at St. Francis High at 6:30 p.m.

• Aptos 3, St. Francis 0 – The Aptos High Mariners made due without senior captain Madelin Smith in a 25-21, 25-21, 25-12 win over the visting St. Francis High Sharks on Thursday night in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play.

Smith, a first-team All-SCCAL selection last season, was out with injury.

Jillian Rodriguez had 13 kills and four aces, Chloe Manor and Peyton Dueck had 10 digs apiece and the Mariners (2-4, 2-0) totaled 11 aces, 32 kills and 62 digs as a team.

Aptos played at Carmel High on Friday night — the results of that game were not available at time of print — and travels to Soquel High on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for a critical league match against the talented Knights.

• North Salinas 3, Watsonville 0 – The Watsonville High Wildcatz lost to North Salinas High in a 25-21, 25-21, 25-19 sweep on Thursday in a Monterey Bay League Pacific division match.

Watsonville (3-4, 1-1) will try to bounce back on Tuesday when it travels to play cross-city rival Pajaro Valley High at 6:30 p.m.

BOY’S WATER POLO

• Salinas 12, Aptos 8 – Beck Escalante scored three goals and Matt Morse also found the back of the net twice but the Aptos High Mariners still fell against the Salinas High Cowboys on Thursday in Monterey Bay League Gabilan division action.

Aptos (1-2, 1-2) goalie Tony Stranger made six saves.

The Mariners return to league action on Tuesday at Stevenson High at 5 p.m.

GIRL’S WATER POLO

• Aptos 12, Salinas 3 – Kristen Malone scored four goals, made three assists and recorded five steals to power the Aptos High Mariners to their third straight Monterey Bay League Gabilan division win on Thursday against Salinas High.

Kelly Taylor scored four goals and Kaylee Pryor made five saves.

Aptos (3-0, 3-0) hosts its annual tournament today before continuing its MBL-G season on

Tuesday at San Lorenzo Valley High at 5 p.m.

GIRL’S CROSS COUNTRY

• Santa Cruz 15, St. Francis 47; St. Francis 15, Mt. Madonna inc. – The St. Francis High Sharks started their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League dual meet season with a loss to Santa Cruz High and a win against Mt. Madonna on Thursday at UC Santa Cruz.

Riley Croghan was St. Francis’ top finisher, taking seventh in 15 minutes, 34 seconds. Cami Ryan (8th, 15:38) and Olivia Burke (9th, 16:16) followed Croghan closely.

St. Francis will run at Toro Park today in Salinas for the Earlybird Invitational.

• Aptos 15, Harbor 48 – Aptos High posted a perfect score in its Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League dual meet season-opening win over Harbor High on Thursday.

Marea Zlatunich completed the 3.44-mile course in 23 minutes, 4 seconds and Sofia Natividad (23:48) and Annika Niles (23:50) trailed close behind Zlatunich.

Aptos will run at today’s Earlybird Invitational in Salinas at Toro Park.

BOY’S CROSS COUNTRY

• Santa Cruz 22, St. Francis 33; St. Francis 15, Mt. Madonna inc. – The St. Francis High Sharks opened up their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League dual meet season with a loss to Santa Cruz High and a win against Mt. Madonna on Thursday at UC Santa Cruz.

St. Francis’ E.J. Kelly finished second overall with a time of 11 minutes, 44 seconds. It was the fastest time on the 2.08-mile course in school history.

Teammate Paul Kane was 5th in 12:31.

St. Francis competes at the Earlybird Invitational today at Toro Park in Salinas.

• Aptos 15, Harbor 48 – Luis Garcia completed a 3.44-mile course in 19 minutes, 29 seconds to lead the way for the Aptos High, which recorded a perfect score in a Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League dual meet win over Harbor on Thursday.

Josiah Sweet (19:54) and Koya Oki (20:20) trailed Garcia in second and third, respectively.

GIRL’S TENNIS

• Notre Dame 5, MVC 2 – Catherine Chen and Chloe Herria won their No. 2 doubles match but the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs could not pull out the team victory against the Notre Dame-Salinas Spirits on Thursday in non-league action.

Grace Sumares recorded the Mustangs’ second match victory, winning in a 6-1, 6-0 sweep in No. 4 singles.

• Santa Cruz 5, St. Francis 2 – Katherine Casper and Gabi Gutierrez each won their singles matches in the St. Francis High Sharks Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League loss to Santa Cruz High on Thursday.

• Aptos 7, Harbor 0  – The Aptos High Mariners shutout the Harbor High Pirates on Thursday in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play.

Rebecca and Lila Sampson, Madison Glynn and Molly Mott won their singles matches, while the doubles team of Gianna Rovai and Magdalena Sanchez and Amy Buchanan and Carol Mejia also won.

WOMEN’S JC VOLLEYBALL

• Cabrillo wins tournament – The Cabrillo College Seahawks won a pair of games to capture the Folsom lake Classic tournament title on Wednesday night in Folsom.
Cabrillo (6-0) swept both Ohlone College, 25-15, 25-13, 25-13, and host Folsom Lake College, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15.

In the championship match, Ellie Cary had 12 kills, Jolie Samuelson finished with nine kills, three aces and 10 digs and Mari Molina made 20 assists and eight digs.

Cabrillo hosts it annual tournament today.
