WATSONVILLE — Watsonville police on Thursday arrested a man who sought a sexual relationship with an 11-year-old girl.

Cirilio Mejía, 22, was charged with kidnapping with intent to commit rape, lewd acts with a child and aggravated assault on a minor, all felonies. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

Mejia faces life in prison if convicted, Watsonville Police spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said.

According to Pulido, police began investigating Mejia about one month ago after the girl’s mother found her in the bathroom with Mejía. The girl is mentally disabled, Pulido said.

Mejia admitted wanting to have a sexual relationship with the victim, police said.

The suspect rented a room at the home and was treated like family, Pulido said.

Mejia is expected to make a court appearance next week.
