WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville man was arrested Tuesday at his home for charges of attempted murder after he allegedly fired a gun into a residence.

On Saturday around 6:47 p.m., deputies were called to the 200 block of Jolon Drive for a shooting. Deputies learned a teal Honda CRV with two-to-four suspects had followed the shooting victim’s vehicle to a home on Jolon Drive, said Santa Cruz County Sheriff Sgt. Brian Cleveland.

As the two victims got out of their car, they were confronted by an armed suspect from the car that followed them. The suspect began to fire a handgun in the direction of the victims who fled into a nearby residence for protection.

The people inside the home were uninjured.

The vehicle driven by the suspects fled on Jolon Drive toward Hathaway Avenue and were not immediately located, Cleveland said.

Investigators processed the scene for forensic evidence. Sheriff’s detectives began working on leads and were able to identify 20-year-old Irvin Chavez as the suspect who fired his handgun at the victims.

On Tuesday, detectives were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Chavez and he taken into custody without incident around 2:20 p.m. on the 100 block of Rockins Lane in Watsonville.

Chavez was booked into jail on charges of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied residence, committing a felony while out on bail, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony, Cleveland said.

His bail was set at $250,000.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Sgt. Jacob Ainsworth at 454-7640.
