SANTA CRUZ — A Santa Cruz man was arrested Saturday after allegedly fleeing the scene of a collision he caused, and then barricading himself in his residence with a loaded gun when officers arrived, California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Trista Drake said.
Austin Douglas Clary, 35, also fought a police dog deployed by police, Drake said.
Clary was charged with hit and run, DUI, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer and committing a crime with the intent to terrorize. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, jail records showed.
According to Drake, Clary fled in his Ford pickup after striking a vehicle in the area of 7th Avenue and Capitola Road at about 11:25 p.m.
Based on witness descriptions, police went to Clary’s residence where they found him standing in his driveway by his truck.
During their contact, Clary reportedly told the officers he would talk to them after going inside his residence to get his gun. He then fled inside and prevented officers from entering.
Multiple CHP officers and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, and the Santa Cruz Police Department deployed its Bearcat armored vehicle to cover for officers to retrieve their vehicles. In addition, a helicopter provided air support, Drake said.
Clary came out of his residence after about an hour, waving his arms in the air and screaming at the officers, Drake said.
Officers sent a police dog after Clary ignored commands to surrender, but he fought the dog. He also fought several shocks by Tasers, Drake said.
Clary was arrested when he tried to run back inside.
