WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville man was arrested early Tuesday morning after a brief chase in a stolen car, which ended when he collided with a tree.

Jesse Anaya Castillo, 20, was charged with evading police, vehicle theft, driving with a suspended license, possession of a controlled substance, possession of burglary tools, possession of a switchblade knife, hit and run and resisting arrest. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

According to California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney, Castillo was speeding in a 1986 Nissan pickup in the area of northbound Highway 1 near Highway 129.

Castillo exited the highway at Green Valley Road and continued to flee, Courtney said. The pursuit continued on surface streets until Castillo collided with a tree on Green Valley Road near Maranatha Drive.

Castillo then attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended by CHP officers and taken into custody.

The passenger remained in the truck at the collision scene.

Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be factors in the collision.
