SANTA CRUZ — A Santa Cruz man was arrested Tuesday after police officers found a high-powered rifle in his hotel room.

David Steven Gomez, 34, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. He was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

According to Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Cleveland, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Gang Enforcement Team served a search warrant at a hotel on the 100 block of Ocean Street at about 11 a.m.

During the search, deputies found a 338 Lapua high powered rifle, which was built for long-range sniper applications, according to the Lapua company website.

Police also found ammunition in the room.
