SANTA CRUZ—A man was shot late Tuesday night in the Beach Flats area of Santa Cruz near the Beach Boardwalk. At least two shots were reported by multiple witnesses around Third Street at Kaye Street at 9:14 p.m.

Joyce Blaschke of the Santa Cruz Police Department said when officers arrived they located evidence of the shooting in the 100 block of Kaye Street and contacted several witnesses who confirmed the shooting.

During the investigation, officers learned the victim had been dropped off at Dominican Hospital and was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Other victims were in the line of fire during the shooting but were uninjured, Blaschke said.

SCPD detectives worked the case into the morning hours interviewing witnesses and victims, processing the crime scene and reviewing video surveillance. Initial investigative developments show it was a targeted act of violence, Blaschke said.

It was the second shooting in the area since Sunday, when someone fired several shots from a car near Cowell’s Beach. No one was hurt in that shooting and no arrests have been made in either case.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Santa Cruz Police Department Investigations Unit 420-5820.
