Update: The man struck by a garbage truck Thursday morning is in a Bay Area trauma center in critical condition, Watsonville Police Sgt. Mike Ridgway said Friday morning.

WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville man suffered major injuries Thursday morning after he was struck by a garbage truck as he crossed Freedom Boulevard, Watsonville Police Master Officer Burt Iles said.

According to Iles, the 35-year-old man was not in the crosswalk when he ran across the busy road on the 1900 block of Freedom Boulevard near Green Valley Road at about 9:15 a.m.

Police closed both lanes of southbound Freedom Boulevard as they investigated the incident.

It was unclear what caused the collision.

The truck was not loaded with garbage at the time of the collision, and drugs and alcohol are not thought to be a factor, Iles said.
