The Monte Vista Christian boys’ basketball team now sits alone atop of the league standings following a 56-40 win against Rancho San Juan High on Wednesday evening.

Junior forward Dominic Pierini finished with a game-best 14 points to help the Mustangs improve to 5-0 in Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division play. 

Fellow teammate Jack Ryan contributed 11 points, followed by Bryce Brogan and Matteo Vidal each with eight points for MVC. 

Andrew Hale and Eric Torres each finished with a team-best 12 points for the Trailblazers (7-7), who dropped to 4-1 in league play.

The Mustangs (12-3) will try to keep their five game win streak alive at Soledad High (5-10, 4-1) in league action on Friday at 7pm. 

Girls basketball

Alisal 53, at Watsonville 34: Fernanda Lazo finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds for the Wildcatz in a loss to the Trojans in PCAL Gabilan Division action on Wednesday night.

Stephanie Martinez added 8 points, while fellow teammate Isabella Love finished with 6 points including a pair of 3-pointers for Watsonville (6-9, 1-4).

The ‘Catz will try to snap a four-game losing streak at Alvarez (6-7, 0-5) on Friday at 7pm.

St. Francis 62, at Gonzales 38: Freshman guard Maya Calfee notched 19 points for the Sharks in a crushing win over the Spartans in PCAL Cypress Division action on Wednesday night.

Senior guard Emily Raich added 14 points, while fellow senior teammates Aaliysah Gomez and Nevaeh Litel each contributed eight points for St. Francis, which remains unbeaten at 5-0 in the league standings.

The Sharks (11-2) will try to keep their undefeated league record intact against North Monterey County (9-4, 4-1) on Friday at 7pm.

Boys soccer

St. Francis 2, at Oakwood 0: Sophomore Liam Rawson and senior Micah Cervantes each scored one goal for the Sharks in their PCAL Santa Lucia Division win over Oakwood on Tuesday.

An assist was credited to sophomore Tiago Caetano, while senior Aaron Rocha Diaz was able to keep the defensive line compact to help senior goalkeeper Andrew Garibay record the clean sheet.

St. Francis (4-2, 3-0) will host York School (2-2, 1-1) in league action on Saturday at 11am. 

Girls soccer 

Aptos 2, at Soquel 0: Aubrie Ford and Alexa Castañeda each scored one goal for the Mariners in their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win over the Knights on Tuesday night. 

Ford scored in the 38th minute with an assist by Isabella Hartnett.

Castañeda notched the second goal of the evening in the 46th minute off a direct kick from Payton Westjohn.

“The goalkeeper spit it out and Alexa volleyed it into the back of the net,” said Mariners coach Gina Castañeda on the goal scored by Alexa Castañeda.

Goalkeeper Alessandra Zuniga recorded three saves for Aptos (9-3-1, 3-0), which will play at Harbor on Jan. 23 at 7pm.
