The man officials believe is responsible for deliberately starting the Bear Fire that scorched close to 400 acres in Boulder Creek, starting on Oct. 16, and injuring 13 firefighters, made an appearance in Superior Court Tuesday.

The Watsonville Police Department has been awarded two grants, totaling $105,000, from the California Office of Traffic Safety for a year-long program of special enforcement and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic-related deaths and injuries.
