One killed in big rig vs car collision

WATSONVILLE—A man died Tuesday evening after a big rig and small car collided on San Juan Road on the outskirts of Watsonville.

Monterey County Sheriff/Coroner’s Office Cmdr. Derrel Simpson identified the victim as Jose Avila Rios, 36, of Salinas.

California Highway Patrol officer Jessica Madueño said the big rig was traveling westbound on San Juan Road at Murphy Road around 4:50pm when it collided with a Honda sedan. Rios, the Honda driver, was pronounced dead at the scene, Madueño said.

As of 7pm Thursday, information was not available as to what led up to the crash and if drugs or alcohol played a role.

The incident is still under investigation.
