A Watsonville man suffered minor injuries Monday when he lost control of his Toyota Tundra pickup and rolled upside down on a hillside on Highway 1 in Watsonville. The California Highway Patrol said no other vehicles were involved. The man was entering southbound Highway 1 from Harkins Slough Road at 4pm when he lost control and veered up a steep hill. The CHP said alcohol and or drugs appeared to play a role in the crash.

In order to get to where he crashed, the likely impaired driver (according to the article) had to have driven past dozens or hundreds of PVHS students walking home across the CA1 overpass (shown in the background of the photo). The sidewalk on that overpass has no barrier to protect pedestrians from traffic. This was a near miss that could have been significantly worse. We need to protect our students’ path home before something worse happens.

      Who was the driver? What time of day? Was the driver here illegally–in other words, was he or she licensed and insured? Is this a first DUI offence or…?
