As summer wanes and the school year approaches, hundreds of families gathered in Watsonville Plaza Saturday to receive free new backpacks filled with school supplies.
In hosting its annual backpack giveaway, the Salvation Army Watsonville Corps joined with the Red Cross, Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County, Freedom Rotary, Salud Para la Gente and Scouting America.
In all, the organizations gave way 450 backpacks, as a long line of people snaked down the path.
While they waited, children played games and, under the tutelage of the local scout troop, participated in a science experiment to make cups of homemade slime to keep.
Salvation Army Board Chair Trina Coffman-Gomez said the event was created to bring the community together, along with several service providers, to help those that need it.
“We know that there is a tremendous need in this community for everybody to have the same equal playing field to get started with their education,” she said.
Interim City Manager Tamara Vides agreed.
“I think it’s great to see the community coming out together and supporting youth to get ready for school,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity.”
