Santa Cruz Warriors slip past Long Island Nets at Winter Showcase Cup | NBA G League

Jeff Dowtin Jr. finishes with a game-high 28 points for the Sea Dubs

LAS VEGAS—Golden State Warriors two-way player Jeff Dowtin Jr. finished with a game-high 28 points to help lift the Santa Cruz Warriors past the Long Island Nets, 81-77, at the NBA G League Winter Showcase Cup on Monday.

Dowtin, who scored 18 points in the first half, also finished with nine rebounds. Quinndary Weatherspoon added 19 points for the Warriors, who improved to 5-8 this season.

Brandon Rachal led the Nets with 14 points off the bench. A trio of Nets players finished the game with 13 points: Marcus Zegarowski, Josh Gray and Craig Randall II.

After trading baskets for a majority of the opening stanza, the Nets went on an 11-0 run near the end of the quarter to take a six-point lead, 22-16.

The Warriors came rumbling back by outscoring Long Island in the second quarter and taking a 46-38 lead going into halftime.

Long Island took its first lead of the second half, 77-76, with just a little more than a minute left in the game.

The Warriors recaptured the lead after a successful challenge overturned an offensive foul with 21.8 seconds remaining.

The result of the challenge sent Weatherspoon to the free throw line. He converted one of two attempts, giving the Warriors a 79-77 lead. A strong defensive stand by the Warriors sealed the game.

Santa Cruz forwards Jordan Bell and Axel Toupane were a huge presence on the glass. Bell had 11 rebounds and Toupane finished with nine.

The Sea Dubs play their final game of the Showcase Cup tomorrow night against the Lakeland Magic at 6:00pm.
