WATSONVILLE — A major repair project on a large sinkhole continued Monday on northbound Highway 1 at Buena Vista Drive. Heavy rains contributed to the crater opening up just off the highway south of the northbound Buena Vista exit.

Caltrans officials have been forced to close varying combinations of the three northbound lanes of Highway 1 in order to allow for a stream of heavy equipment and concrete trucks to wiggle into the area.

Officials advise motorists to use the Airport Boulevard exit as an alternative in that they had to close the northbound Buena Vista exit.

Electronic message boards have been posted to alert motorists of the roadwork.

The contractor for the $2 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville.

For information on the project, call the District 5 toll-free number at 423-0396 or visit www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/road_information.htm.
