WATSONVILLE—A man was arrested Tuesday for an array of charges after, officers say, he drove recklessly through multiple counties and rammed into a California Highway Patrol vehicle during a pursuit.

CHP officer Alyssa Gutierrez said Hugo Alberto Cedillos Garcia, 28, is now in custody on a $500,000 bail.

The string of incidents began around 6am when the CHP received numerous calls about a black Honda Civic driving recklessly through multiple counties. The CHP received calls about the vehicle throughout the day past 10pm.

Around 10:30pm, Santa Cruz CHP officers responded to a call of the same black Honda Civic driving recklessly on southbound Highway 1, north of Riverside Drive in Watsonville. When a CHP officer tried to stop the Honda, Garcia failed to yield, exited Highway 1 and turned onto Beach Street, Gutierrez said. The pursuit ended on Lee Road.

During the pursuit, Garcia intentionally crashed into a CHP patrol vehicle, Gutierrez said. He initially refused to come out of the vehicle after the chase had ended, she added.

Garcia was arrested for multiple charges, including DUI, felony evading a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle), resisting/delaying a peace officer and felony vandalism.
