CAPITOLA—A man robbed an armored truck stationed in front of the Bay Federal Credit Union in Capitola Wednesday.
The suspect, armed with a gun, reportedly approached a Gardaworld armored truck around 11:20am and demanded money from one of the truck’s guards, according to Capitola Police. An undisclosed amount of money was stolen.
“I saw a man run and toss a bag into the front seat of a car and drive off,” one witness was heard saying at the scene.
Police from multiple agencies swarmed the area and set up “Project ROPE,” where neighboring law enforcement agencies monitor key intersections in hopes of snaring the suspect vehicle.
The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic male in his 30s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with short brown hair, a thin build, weighing approximately 170 pounds. The suspect was wearing a dark-colored baseball hat with a white logo, a black cloth face mask with a white logo, black gloves, blue jeans, and gray shoes with white trim, police said.
The suspect never made entry into the Bay Federal Credit Union and nobody inside—bank tellers or patrons—were threatened, according to police.
Bay Federal posted on social media that all of its employees and members are safe.
“We’re grateful for the quick response from local law enforcement partners,” the credit union wrote on Twitter.
Police sealed off the bank while they combed the area.
