Two people died in a solo-vehicle crash early Saturday morning north of Santa Cruz.

The California Highway Patrol said a black 2015 Chrysler 200 was traveling south on Highway 1 around 4am at an undetermined speed. For reasons still under investigation, the Chrysler crossed into the northbound lane, collided with a guardrail, continued south and crashed into a dirt embankment. The impact overturned the car which landed on Hwy. 1 north of Swanton Road.

Both occupants suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors, and it is unclear whether the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Their identities remain unknown, the CHP said. Anyone with information is asked to call CHP dispatch at 831.796.2160.
