Two people were killed and two others injured in a shooting early Monday morning on Jetty Road in Moss Landing, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.
Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies, California State Parks personnel and California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 2am on Nov. 2.
When deputies arrived, they found two people who were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third person arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. That person’s condition was unknown as of Monday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A fourth person was taken from the scene to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The identities of the two people killed have not been released, pending forensic examinations and notification of their families.
“This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of two lives,” Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said in a statement Monday afternoon. “Our detectives are working to establish the circumstances surrounding what occurred. We ask anyone who may have information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist with this investigation.”
At the request of the Sheriff’s Office, California State Parks Police closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach while investigators continued their work.
Jetty Road is a roughly half-mile paved road that branches off Highway 1 just north of the Elkhorn Slough bridge. The road runs behind coastal sand dunes and leads to a parking area near the north jetty of Moss Landing Harbor and Moss Landing State Beach.
The area is a popular destination for birdwatchers, beachgoers and visitors to the Monterey Bay coastline.
Investigators have not released information about what led to the shooting or whether any suspects have been identified.
The Sheriff’s Office said there was no active threat to the Moss Landing community as of Monday afternoon.
The investigation remains ongoing.
