SALINAS—Two inmates escaped from the Monterey County Adult Detention Facility early Saturday.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said 21-year-old Santos Samuel Fonseca and 20-year-old Jonathan Salazar were both awaiting trial on unrelated murder charges along with numerous other felony charges.

The MCSO said Sunday it was offering a $5,000 reward for information that would lead to their capture.

Fonseca is 5-foot, 7-inches and 150 pounds, while Salazar is 5-7 and 170 pounds. Both are Hispanic with black hair and brown eyes. Both have been in custody since 2018.

An investigation is underway to determine their means of escape, “but, at this time, we can provide no details on that topic,” MCSO said. “Our focus, and resources, are dedicated to locating and returning Fonseca and Salazar to custody.”

Anyone who sees either man is asked to call 911.

“Do not approach them, as they are considered dangerous,” MCSO said.
