CLOSE CALL Firefighters douse hot spots in a brush fire that erupted on the 300 block of Amesti Road Friday. An official from CalFire said the 3:20pm brush fire climbed to two acres before firefighters from Pajaro Valley Fire District, Watsonville and Central Fire tackled the flames. There were no injuries, and no structures were damaged. The blaze, whose cause is still under investigation, spread rapidly through low brush and a clutch of trees and sent up a huge plume of smoke visible from downtown Watsonville. Flames came within 20 yards of a row of homes. The California Highway Patrol shut down the section of Amesti Road near Paraiso Drive for more than two hours.
