Dozens of people gathered Friday to celebrate the opening of a 53-unit housing complex, the latest in Watsonville’s drive to provide housing for all income levels.

The complex at 1482 Freedom Blvd., called Tabasa Gardens, was built by Hayward-based Eden Housing.

A unique feature of the project is a 10-by-30-foot mosaic outdoor mosaic mural created by Watsonville artist Kathleen Crocetti and a team of volunteers at Muzzio Mosaic Arts Center. The topic of the mural shows Rosie Tabasa, a local Filipina leader, and her son, Jess, standing at a doorway based on a black and white early day photograph. Jess went on to be a local middle school teacher.
