BEN LOMOND — A Watsonville man was killed Sunday in a head-on collision on Highway 9, California Highway Patrol officer Julieta Trenado said.

According to Trenado, the 56-year-old victim was driving a 2001 PT Cruiser north on Highway 9 near Highland County Park about 6 a.m. when his vehicle drifted into the southbound lane.

There, the vehicle crashed into a 2004 Honda Pilot being driven by a 36-year-old Boulder Creek woman.

The PT Cruiser burst into flames after the impact, and good Samaritans pulled the man out. He was airlifted to Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The female driver refused medical care.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
