Rapper and songwriter Kabwassa has released a new single entitled “In My Head.”

Born and raised in Watsonville, Kabwassa now lives in Los Angeles and has steadily gained a following in California. Much of his music features his hometown, and he often writes about issues surrounding it such as gentrification and the struggles of migrant workers.

“In My Head,” however, takes a more introspective turn. Kabwasa said he wrote the song to express how he was feeling as an artist at the time, and about dealing with being in the public eye more.

“I was constantly getting in my head about not being where I wanted to be,” Kabwasa said. “[I was] feeling defeated. So I decided to express it in a song, to make a point that the only way to beat that feeling is to keep moving forward.”

“In My Head” is available to stream on various platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, YouTube and more.

Kabwasa said that due to the statewide stay-at-home order, he had to find a creative way to make a video to compliment the song. He set up a green screen in his house, then sent the footage to an online director, Damaris (also known as GRILL0101).

“I wanted to think of a way to make a cool video without leaving my house,” he said. “[Damaris] turned it into the visually amazing video it turned out to be.”
