Watsonville High’s Layla Ruiz and Daniela Salazar both broke school records at the 39th annual CCS Top 8 track and field Invitational on Saturday in Los Gatos.

Ruiz, a freshman, broke the program’s record in the 3,200-meters with a time of 11 minutes, 20.36 seconds, while Salazar, a senior, reset her own record in the 800 at 2:17.57.

Salazar finished fourth in her event, while Ruiz took eighth in the 3,200. Ruiz also finished 12th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:16.67, which was just four seconds off the school record in the event.

Aptos High senior Marea Zlatunich finished runner-up in the 3,200 with an impressive time of 11:02.69.

Fellow Aptos senior Sofia Natividad took seventh in the event in 11:20.32.

Mariners’ sophomore Brynn Mitchell had a solid showing in the jumps, taking eighth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump with leaps of 36 feet, 6 inches and 17-9, respectively.

Aptos’ Indra Lyons placed 11th in the 100 hurdles (16.18).

For North Monterey County High, senior Jocelyn Cazarez finished fifth in the discus (110-9) and 14th in the shot put (31-10).

Senior Condor Sarah Delgado took second in her heat of the 800 and placed 13th overall at (2:22.16).

Deleissegues, Bellucci reset records — St. Francis High seniors Chloe Deleissegues and Samantha Bellucci reset their records in the 400 and triple jump, respectively, at Saturday’s Bill Kearney Invitational at Hartnell College in Salinas.

Deleissegues finished second in the 400 at 61.13, and was second in the 200 (27.11).

Bellucci leapt 33-4.5 to beat her old mark and take fourth in the triple jump. She also won the high jump with a leap of 4-9.

Monte Vista Christian sophomore Delaney Ezeji-Okoye won the pole vault by clearing 9-6.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Matys impresses — Aptos junior Hunter Matys took seventh in the long jump at the 39th annual CCS Top 8 Invitational on Saturday at Los Gatos High.

Matys set a new personal record in the event of 22-2.5 to place seventh.

His teammate, senior Jordan Kadlecek, was 10th in the same event at 21-6.

Aptos senior Owen Mastropietro was fourth in his heat of the 300 hurdles, and finished 10th overall in 41.77.

Fellow senior Jackson Schenone placed 12th overall in the 1,600 at 4:25.97.

Watsonville’s Jose Villanueva was 11th in the triple jump (41-6).

Watsonville’s Llamas, Aptos’ Austen toss well — Watsonville senior Rolando Llamas won the shot put in at Saturday’s Bill Kearney Invitational at Hartnell College in Salinas.

Llamas recorded a winning toss of 43-10.5, and also finished fifth in the discus at 116-1.

Aptos senior Alex Austen was second in the discus (136-9) and the shot put (43-5.5).

HS BASEBALL

Aptos 4, Scotts Valley 2 — Josh Barry hit a three-run double to lead the Mariners to a key Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League victory on Friday.

Luke Keaschall was 2-for-3 with a scored run, a walk and three stolen bases for Aptos, which improved to 4-1 in league play with the victory.

Jacob Mendoza picked up the win after five innings of work. He allowed five hits, an earned run and two walks, while striking out six batters.

Aptos also notched a non-league 10-4 win over Santa Clara High on Saturday behind Will Murphy’s two triples and two walks.

The Mariners had 12 hits in total, including five doubles.

Shane Modena secured the win on the mound.

St. Francis 7, SLV 1 — St. Francis bounced back from Wednesday night’s non-league loss to San Benito High with a 7-1 SCCAL win over San Lorenzo Valley High on Friday.

Domenic Cordova allowed only three hits in his complete-game win. He also walked four but struck out three and allowed no earned runs.

St. Francis (13-4, 4-1) had 10 hits. They were all singles.

Josiah Granados-Diaz was 3-for-4 with a scored run.

Andrew Seymour and Blaise Magana each scored a pair of runs.

The Sharks also edged Westmont High on Saturday in a 6-5 non-league victory.

Magana had a double and an RBI. Brandon Moakler also doubled and scored once.

Four players pitched for St. Francis. Granados-Diaz recorded the win, allowing two hits and striking out three over two innings.

St. Francis welcomes in league-leading Santa Cruz High on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Saratoga 7, MVC 6 — Dominic Felice and Jacob Beardsley homered and Garret Laine extended his hit streak to eight games, but M.V.C. still fell in non-league action on Saturday on the road.

Felice also doubled and earned a walk. Laine and Beardsley each scored twice.

M.V.C. (8-13, 4-8) hosts Monterey High on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

HS SOFTBALL

St. Francis 13, Soquel 2 — The Sharks improved to 3-3 in SCCAL action with a Friday evening win over Soquel High in Watsonville.

Shelby Velasco struck out seven over six innings in the victory. Ariana Azevedo had three hits and two RBIs. Grace Kovacs had two hits and two RBIs.

St. Francis plays at Soquel High on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Watsonville wins 3 — Watsonville notched three more blowout wins in their weekend tournament on Saturday, beating Scotts Valley High, Los Altos High and Aragon High by a combined score of 30-1.

Juliana Wilson had three home runs, two doubles, 10 RBIs and five scored runs over the three wins.

Angelina Heredia and Anastacia Alba also homered.

Watsonville (17-2) returns to Monterey Bay League Gabilan division play on Tuesday at Notre Dame-Salinas at 4:30 p.m.

HS VOLLEYBALL

• Aptos 3, Harbor 0 — The Mariners inched within one win of clinching at least a share of the SCCAL title with their 25-18, 25-8, 25-14 sweep on Friday night.

Kacey Losik had five digs, 20 kills, three blocks and two aces. Jordan Notari added five digs and 11 kills. Michael Spinelli made 42 assists.

Aptos (16-3, 11-1) travels to Santa Cruz High on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

• Cabrillo goes undefeated — Cabrillo College beach volleyball finished its Coast Conference team season undefeated with a 5-0 win over the College of San Mateo and a 4-1 victory against Gavilan College on Friday in Gilroy.

Cabrillo (11-1, 7-0) advances to the Coast Conference Pairs Championships on Friday at West Valley College in Saratoga.
