Ceiba Prep senior Jesse Franco put up a school record 69 points in a 93-87 road loss to Trinity Christian on Wednesday night.

The Spartans hadn’t scored more than 44 points in a game in its 0-6 start. It was the most points scored in Monterey County since it was set by current Alvarez High coach Mark Haddan, who had 65 for Alisal in 1971.

Franco made 75 percent (12-of-16) of his shot attempts and he made 18-of-25 free throw attempts for the Spartans. He also grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with three assists and three steals.

Kevin Gurries and Patrick McCoy combined for 70 points for Trinity. 

Gurries finished with 37 points, while McCoy tallied 33 in helping the Warriors snap a seven-game losing streak. 

Carmel High junior J.T. Byrne scored a school record 47 points on Tuesday for Carmel. 

Up to that point, it was the most points scored in a boys game since Orlando Johnson scored 42 points for Palma in 2007.

Aptos 49, Harbor 48: It took the Mariners an extra period but it was enough to escape with a win on the road against the Pirates in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play last week on Friday.

Harbor led by eight points with two minutes left but Aptos closed with a 12-2 run to tie the score at 37-all to force overtime. 

Senior guard Brian Bowyer made nine points — five in the fourth quarter and four in overtime for the Mariners (9-7, 3-0), who play San Lorenzo Valley today at 7 p.m.

St. Francis 61, Pajaro Valley 44: The Sharks snapped their four-game losing streak by winning their PCAL Cypress Division opener against the Grizzlies on Monday.

Senior Joey Garibay led St. Francis with 22 points, while senior Lawson Orradre scored 15 points. Junior Isaiah Gonzales contributed 14 points.

Pajaro Valley was led by seniors Brian Gallardo with 17 points, followed by Brian Chavez with 10.

Girls basketball

Monte Vista 60, Seaside 42: The Mustangs defeated the defending PCAL Gabilan Division co-champion Spartans in their season-opener on Wednesday. 

Junior Hanna Harvey led M.V.C. (11-4, 1-0) with 19 points, while senior Madison Hill contributed 14 and sophomore Paloma Ramirez scored 10.

Senior Daja Scott Mitchell recorded a double-double for Seaside (7-4, 0-1) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Sarai Wheeler chipped in with 13 points.

Boys soccer

Pajaro Valley 3, Monterey 0: Junior striker Kevin Rincón scored twice, giving him 14 goals on the season, to help the Grizzlies win their PCAL Mission Division opener against the Toreadors on Monday.

Rincón added an assist, while freshman Juan Mora also scored for Pajaro Valley (6-2-2, 1-0-0), who are unbeaten in their past six games.

Alan Bedolla and Luis Velázquez each recorded assists for Pajaro Valley, which has outscored opponents 22-2 in that span with five shutouts.

The Grizzlies host Gilroy on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Monte Vista Christian 2, Pacific Grove 1: Freshman forward Evan Mariscal scored in the 33rd and 79th minutes to help the Mustangs capture a non-league win against the Breakers last week on Thursday.

Girls soccer

Aptos 3, Harbor 1: The Mariners scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Pirates in their SCCAL match Thursday night.

Harbor High’s Maddie Park headed in a cross from Alex Martinez-Cavadias in 20th minute.

Aptos tied the score on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute before taking the lead on a pair of goals in the second half.

Pajaro Valley 3, Santa Catalina 1: Jasmin Castillo had two goals and an assist as the Grizzlies defeated the Cougars in their PCAL Santa Lucia Division game on Tuesday.

Castillo has recorded a team-best 13 goals this season. Kylie Montañez had one goal and one assist for the Grizzlies (5-3, 3-1).

Castillo scored the last of her three goals in the final minute in a win against Stevenson in league play last week on Thursday.
