The Pajaro Valley cheer team landed a first and fourth place finish at Oct. 13’s Cheer and Dance Competition at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
The Grizzlies took first in the Gameday Sideline Situational category, and fourth in the Show Cheer Novice Varsity division. They also earned a bid to Spirit Nationals.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
• Condors take 7th – North Monterey County finished seventh as a team in the final Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan division Center Meet of the season on Wednesday at Toro Park in Salinas.
Senior Jiovanni Garcia led the Condors in 18th with a time of 17 minutes, 36 seconds.
• Aptos 24, Soquel 31 – Josiah Sweet led Aptos in its Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League dual meet win over Soquel on Oct. 11 in Soquel.
Sweet crossed the finish line of the 5-kilometer course in 15:16. Teammates John G. Eikemeyer (3rd, 15:53) and Freddy Von Oepen (5th, 16:05) also finished in the top five for Aptos.
• Sweet sneaks into top 20 – Aptos’ Josiah Sweet finished 19th in the varsity race of the Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas on Oct. 13.
Sweet finished the 3-mile course in 16:57.8.
Monte Vista Christian’s Andrew Bachman took 48th in 17:41.3, helping the Mustangs take 15th as a team.
Patrick McCarthy was St. Francis’ fastest finisher. He took 63rd (17:49).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
• Mora continues success – North Monterey County’s Faith Mora took third in the final PCAL Gabilan Center Meet of the fall on Wednesday at Toro Park.
Mora, a senior, completed the 3-mile course in 20:12.
N.M.C. took fourth as a team. Sophomore Andrea Villegas trailed Mora in eighth (21:19).
Gilroy won the meet with a score of 59.
• Aptos 22, Soquel 33 – Susana Estrada and Kirsten Martin finished 1-2 for Aptos in its SCCAL dual meet victory on Oct. 11 at Soquel.
Estrada finished the 5-kilometer course in 18:16 and Martin followed in 18:20. Teammate Kailea Zlatunich was fourth (18:27).
• Zlatunich lands in top 10 – Aptos’ Kailea Zlatunich tied for eighth in the varsity race of Oct. 13’s Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas.
She completed the 3-mile course 20:02.7.
Teammate Sophia Willoughby took 64th (22:04.9).
Elizabeth Splees was Monte Vista Christian’s top finisher, taking 134th in 24:47.9.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
• Aptos 3, SLV 0 – The Mariners swept the Cougars 25-14, 25-10, 25-10 in SCCAL action behind Chloe Manor’s 27 assists, three aces and five digs.
Jillian Rodriguez added seven kills and four aces, Natalia Ackerman chipped in eight kills and two aces and Gabby Giuffre finished with four kills and seven aces for Aptos, which outlasted league rival Harbor in five sets on Oct. 11.
Peyton Dueck (16 kills, 18 digs), Rodriguez (21 kills, 18 digs) and Manor (49 assists, 11 digs) all posted double-doubles in the win over Harbor.
• MVC 3, Christopher 1 – M.V.C.’s Aleah Rafat and Allie Tillery combined for 20 kills and seven blocks in Tuesday night’s 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-19 PCAL-Gabilan win.

GIRLS TENNIS
• St. Francis 4, MVC 3 – Gabi Gutierrez won her 10th straight PCAL-Mission match and St. Francis edged Monte Vista Christian as a squad on Tuesday.
Gutierrez won 6-2, 6-0 over Kayleigh Bajarin in No. 1 singles to stay perfect.
Sophia Fryn (6-2, 6-3) also won for St. Francis in No. 2 singles, and the doubles teams of Santana Rigor and Marissa Vasquez (6-4, 6-4) and Emily Garcia and Mika Marheineke (6-2, 7-6) also came away with victories.
M.V.C.’s Kate Ki (6-1, 6-2) and Kendall Fournier (6-1, 6-1) won in No. 3 and No. 4 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Katie Amado and Abby Ortega (6-3, 6-2) also won for the Mustangs.

GIRLS WATER POLO
• Aptos 12, Christopher 5 – Kristen Malone scored seven goals to lead Aptos over Christopher on Wednesday night in PCAL-Gabilan play.
Malone also scored four goals in the Mariners’ 18-5 league win over San Lorenzo Valley on Tuesday night. Reina Garcia and Kelly Taylor added four goals apeice in the win over S.L.V.
Jordan Wagner contributed three goals, three steals and two assists for Aptos, which also beat up on Salinas in an 11-4 win on Oct. 11.
Malone had six goals, six steals and two assists in the win over the Cowboys.

WOMEN’S JC VOLLEYBALL
• Cabrillo 3, Hartnell 1 – The Cabrillo College Seahawks completed the first round of their Coast Conference North division season with a 25-18, 25-10, 26-28, 25-19 win on Oct. 12.
Jolie Samuelson had 14 kills, five aces and five digs, and Kylie Kvam recorded 10 kills, six aces, six digs and three blocks for Cabrillo (16-2, 6-0).
The Seahawks, ranked No. 4 in the state, host Foothill College on Saturday at 1 p.m.

• Gavilan 3, Cabrillo 2 – Brandon Kim and Ventura Garcia scored in Cabrillo College’s Coast Conference South division loss.
