MONTEREY COUNTY — California Highway Patrol officers on Tuesday arrested a Monterey woman after a 30-mile pursuit down Highway 1 that ended when her minivan became stuck, and she climbed in the back to drink a bottle of cognac, CHP Officer Sam Courtney said.

Anne Figen, 61, was charged with DUI, resisting arrest and assaulting emergency personnel. She was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, court records show.

According to Courtney, Capitola Police officers attempted to stop a suspected DUI driver on Soquel Wharf Road near Porter Street when the driver fled in her 2000 Honda Odyssey and entered southbound Highway 1.

CHP took over the pursuit and chased the minivan into Monterey County.

During the chase, officers deflated the minivan’s tires with spike strips, and Figen continued to flee from officers and got stuck as she attempted to make a U-turn in the dirt median just north of Reservation Road.

Figen refused to comply with officers’ instructions to exit the van, and could be seen drinking from a large bottle which was later determined to be cognac, Courtney said.

CHP officers broke the van’s windows to gain entry.
