SANTA CRUZ — The man found dead in his cell Monday at Santa Cruz County Main Jail was strangled, sheriff’s spokeswoman Ashley Keehn announced early Thursday.

German Carrillo, 24, of Watsonville, was in custody on murder charges since April 2013.

Carrillo shared a cell with two other inmates: Mario Lozano, 33, of Santa Cruz, who is in custody for a murder charge, and Jason Cortez, 25, of Watsonville, in custody on firearms charges.

The three men were in a housing unit designated for active gang members.

Detectives are still investigating this case and are working closely with the District Attorney’s Office, Keehn said.
