The Save Our Shores (SOS) organization is encouraging everyone who visits local beaches this Memorial Day Weekend to be an “Ocean Hero.”

The environmental nonprofit asks visitors to leave beaches with all the items they brought with them, including trash.

SOS recommends to:

1) Bring food and beverages in reusable containers and bring belongings in a reusable bag

2) Avoid bringing styrofoam items or plastic food wrappers as they can easily break or rip into small pieces that can harm wildlife

3) Separate recyclables from landfill items and if the trash bins at the beach are full bring trash home to prevent litter.

In a Facebook post SOS explained that when trash cans at beaches fill up and garbage is just left nearby, it can easily blow away or be carried off by wildlife. The debris becomes litter in the environment and will ultimately enter the ocean, causing home to wildlife, ecosystems and even humans.
