A routine traffic stop turned into a chase late Tuesday night that ended with the arrest of a 17-year-old suspected gang member and the recovery of a loaded gun, according to Watsonville Police.

Around 11pm, a silver Honda Civic was stopped near West Sixth and Walker streets. As the car stopped, a passenger jumped out and ran away. Despite repeated commands to stop, the passenger continued to run.

Officers eventually caught up with him a short distance away.

During a search of the area, police found a loaded, unserialized pistol and cocaine that the 17-year-old had with him.

He was taken into custody and booked into Juvenile Hall on multiple charges related to firearm possession, drugs, and resisting arrest.

The driver of the Honda and a second passenger remain outstanding.
