The Stanford Blood Center has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations as its local inventory has dipped to critical levels. The center is especially concerned about its supply of type O+ blood, as they now have only a one-day supply of blood on hand to supply area hospitals. Type O+ is known as the universal blood type for its versatility in emergency situations where the recipient’s blood type is unknown.
The center usually provides roughly 70 units of type O blood each day, but during the summer donations decrease while the need does not. This summer, through July 31, everyone donating blood also gets a tie-dyed T-shirt that says “Greatful for Life,” in addition to the knowledge that your blood might help save a life. Eligible donors of all blood types are urged to schedule an appointment by calling (888) 723-7831 or online at stanfordbloodcenter.org.
