APTOS—A man that died Friday just past noon when his bicycle collided with two parked cars on the Esplanade at Rio Del Mar State Beach has been identified as Joshua Seinmore King, 48.

California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney said King was riding westbound on Rio Del Mar Boulevard at approximately 25-30 miles per hour, as he approached the Esplanade at Aptos Beach Drive, on a long and steep hill at 12:20pm.

At one point King lost control as he entered the Esplanade parking lot and collided with a Toyota Avalon and a Chevrolet 3500 pickup. The impact threw King from his bike onto the pavement. He suffered major injuries.

After being treated at the scene by Aptos/La Selva firefighters and paramedics from American Medical Response, King was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, Courtney said.

The CHP said it is unclear if alcohol and drugs played a role in the collision. King was not wearing a helmet, Courtney said.

The collision is still under investigation.
