WATSONVILLE — Women who want to make a difference in the lives of women and girls in the community are invited to the Watsonville Soroptimist mixer on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Cilantro’s Restaurant, 1934 Main St. in Watsonville (in the Nob Hill shopping center). 

The event will include appetizers and beverages.

Library receives grant

WATSONVILLE — Watsonville Public Library is one of 12 public libraries across the state chosen to receive support from California Humanities as part of the second year of its Library Innovation Lab program.

The program is designed to explore ways to engage immigrant communities through public humanities programming. The Watsonville Library will receive up to $5,000 to support public programs, along with a program of training and technical support.

American Legion needs volunteers for flag installation

WATSONVILLE — The American Legion Post 121 is seeking volunteers to install flags in areas around Watsonville for the Fourth of July.

Volunteers will meet at 6 a.m. on July 4 at the post, 214 Center St. in Watsonville. Breakfast will be provided. They will help install American flags at locations such as Pioneer Cemetery on Freedom Boulevard and Pajaro Valley Cemetery.

The flags will be taken down at 4 p.m.

PVUSD announces winners of reading challenge

WATSONVILLE — The Pajaro Valley Unified School District announced the winners of its end of the year reading challenge.

Using the bilingual early literacy app, Step by Step, Growing Together/Paso a Paso, Creciendo Juntos, students read nearly three million words during the one-month duration of the challenge.

The winners of the challenge are divided in three categories:

• Preschool-TK: Noah Baliscao (TK in Lola Britton’s class at Mar Vista Elementary)

• Kinder to first grade: Marcelino Ortiz Carcia (first grade in Catherine McMinn’s class at HA Hyde Elementary)

• Second–third grade: Brandon Corona-Matias (third grade in Daniel Moreno’s class at Starlight Elementary)

The winners will each receive three movie tickets donated by Green Valley Cinemas.

“Paso a Paso, Creciendo Juntos, Step by Step, Growing Together is a strategy to accomplish our PVUSD Target for Student Success, and is integral to helping every child read on grade level by third grade,” said PVUSD Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez. “We are pleased to support our students and future students in becoming successful readers through Paso a Paso. Early access to literacy is key to fostering a love for reading.”

Rodriguez announced another challenge that would result in three new winners of donated prizes in the same three categories: Preschool to TK, Kinder to 1st grade, and 2nd grade to 3rd grade. The challenge runs through Aug. 14.

SACO holding annual picnic

CORRALITOS — The Slavic American Cultural Organization is inviting the public to its Annual July Picnic at the Corralitos Community Center/Padres Hall, 35 Browns Valley Road, on July 8 from noon to 4 p.m.

The club’s high school senior scholarship recipients will be introduced as well as the student ambassadors who will have just returned from Croatia.

The menu includes steak, chicken or vegetarian, pasta, salad and desserts.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children under 12. No tickets will be sold at the door and reservations must be made by July 3.

Sierra Club presents rail trail event

WATSONVILLE — The Sierra Club of Santa Cruz will present “Trail with Transit” on June 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Watsonville Civic Plaza Community Room, 275 Main St., fourth floor.

The presenter is Mark Mesiti-Miller, member of the Sierra Club Executive Committee and a professional civil engineer, who will speak on constructing a trail alongside the Santa Cruz Branch Line.

CHP offering driver safety class

APTOS — The California Highway Patrol is offering a traffic safety program for senior drivers.

The Age Well, Drive Smart Program is designed to provide drivers with the keys to driving safer and driving longer. This program is designed as an educational tool for mature drivers.

Topics of discussion will include:

• How to tune up driving skills.

• Refreshing their knowledge of the rules of the road.

• Learning about normal, age-related physical changes and how to adjust to them

• When it may be time to limit or stop driving.

• Understanding the alternatives to driving.

Age Well, Drive Smart classes are free of charge. These classes are geared toward drivers age 65 and up, but they are open to anyone who feels they can benefit from this information.

The next class will take place June 29 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Aptos branch of the Santa Cruz Public Library, 7695 Soquel Drive.

Artist’s fabric work on display

CAPITOLA — Beaded fabric wall hangings by Marcia Stein are on display at Zizzo’s Coffeehouse and Wine Bar now through July 15.

The artist reception will be on Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at Zizzo’s, 3555 Clares St. in Capitola.

The pieces range in size from 5-by-7-inches to 15-by-19-inches.

Artists invited to participate in competition

CAPITOLA — Plein air artists are invited to register for the fourth annual Capitola Plein Air competition, exhibition and sale.

Participants will have three days to paint all around Capitola. It will be followed by a one-day competition, judged by pastel artist Terri Ford.

The deadline to register is Aug. 1.

The competition is presented by the Capitola Art and Cultural Commission.

Taco Tuesday returns to Soquel

SOQUEL — Taco Tuesday is back at Anna Jean Cummings Park (Blue Ball Park) in Soquel on June 26 from 5-7:30pm.

These monthly dinners are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month.

Holopono and El Buen Taco will be serving tacos, along with their other signature Hawaiian and Mexican dishes.

Monarch Services hosts benefit yoga session

SANTA CRUZ — An expected 200 people will be practicing asanas (yoga postures) in the sand at the first annual “Yoga With Us” event on June 24.

Registration is $50 per person and begins at 7:45 a.m., with yoga beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Capitola Beach.

All proceeds support Monarch Services’ direct service programs, including providing crisis response, emergency shelter, peer counseling, support groups and legal assistance to domestic violence and sexual assault survivors.

Executive director and co-founder of the Mini Mermaid Running Club Heidi Boynton will be the emcee.

Candidate information workshops scheduled

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — The Nov. 6 General Election is just months away and the deadlines for those interested in running for city office, school district, or special district are quickly approaching. 

To inform those interested on the filing requirements and deadlines, the Santa Cruz County Clerk/Elections Department is co-sponsoring four candidate information workshops, along with the cities of Watsonville, Capitola, Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley.

The workshops will be held on:

• Monday: Santa Cruz Council Chambers, 809 Center St., Santa Cruz, 6-7:30 p.m.

• Thursday: Scotts Valley Council Chambers, 1 Civic Center Drive, Scotts Valley, 6-7:30 p.m.

• June 25: Watsonville Civic Plaza, Community Room, 275 Main St., fourth floor (sixth floor of the parking garage), Watsonville, 6-7:30 p.m.

• June 27: Capitola Community Room, 420 Capitola Ave., Capitola, 6-7:30 p.m.

County elections officials will have Candidate’s Handbooks available. The City Clerks will have candidate materials for people interested in running for city office. 

The candidate filing period begins July 16 and ends Aug. 10.
