Disabled man reunited with his wheels

WATSONVILLE—A disabled man whose only means of transportation was stolen twice in the past two years–and returned to him the first time by good Samaritans–was reunited with it again last week.

John Zurr’s Raleigh Tristar tricycle was stolen last week outside the Dollar Tree in Watsonville, and found in pieces in a wooded area of the slough system.

Watsonville Cyclery helped reassemble it.

Zurr, 72, has been known to ride the tricycle in the Watsonville 4th of July parade.

The Raleigh Tristar is special because the Family Cycling Center in Capitola and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputy Association bought it for him after his first one was stolen in 2017, Watsonville Police spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said.

Zurr told reporters that someone cut the lock in the most recent theft.

He suffered a traumatic brain injury as a teen, and now needs a walker and a wheelchair to get around, according to KSBW.
