August 27, 1929 – September 13, 2017

Resident of Bakersfield

After a long, energetic and fulfilled life of 88 years, Irene succumbed on September 13, 2017.

Daughter of Gus and Pearl Balasis, longtime residents of Bakersfield. From 1935 to 1940, Irene lived with her parents and brother, Gus, at Kern County Park, (later renamed Hart Park) where her father owned and operated a concession stand and amusement rides. Irene described the park as the “biggest playground in the world”. When she was 11 years old, her family moved to their new home in the city of Bakersfield. Irene attended Jefferson grammar school and East Bakersfield High School. She was a song leader for 2 years and played 1st chair violin in orchestra.

Irene met Sam, her husband of 69 years, in 1947 and they married on March 19, 1948.

The family moved to Rio Del Mar, California in 1957, when Sam opened a business with his brother-in-law, John Fiorovich.  After Sam retired, they returned to Bakersfield in 1989.

Irene was a very happy and upbeat person who exuded joy. She derived immense pleasure from hosting dinners, cooking Italian and Greek cuisines and pastries for family and friends. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed bike riding, walking, and gardening. Irene embraced people and cared deeply about the well-being of others. She treasured spending time and making memories with her family. She was gracious, generous, compassionate and was a devoted wife, mother and Nana. She was proud of her Greek heritage and faith and never missed the annual Greek Festival. Irene touched the lives of many people in a very special way and her absence leaves a void in our hearts.

Irene is pre-deceased by her son Craig; and is survived by her husband Sam; daughter Pam Bailey; son-in-law Chris; granddaughter Amanda; brother Gus Balasis; sisters-in-law Beverly Balasis, Celia Fiorovich, Janice Banducci  (Jerry Leverett); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank Raj Desai and the entire staff at Kingston Health Care; Vicki and Gil Bicera and the caregivers at Balance Residential Care; and the wonderful, caring nurses and staff at Optimal Hospice Care.

Our very sincere and heartfelt thanks to Sam and Irene’s neighbors of 28 years, Harold and Becky Raymond, their children and grandchildren. They have been, and continue to be, a constant source of comfort, support and love.

Graveside services will be private.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Optimal Hospice Care, 1315 Boughton Dr., Bakersfield, CA  93308; or
