Los Altos Hills residents Madvi Raya and Merry Lee Eilers served as co-hostesses for International Women of Courage honoree Sgt. Malalai Bahaduri of the Afghan Police Force’s Interdiction (Narcotics) Unit at a banquet sponsored by at the National Press Club in March.
The 2013 International Women of Courage Awards ceremony honored nine recipients, only four of whom were able to travel safely to the U.S.
The awards recognize the courage of women throughout the world who make a substantial difference in the lives of their countrywomen. The nonprofit American Women for International Understanding presents grants to those chosen for demonstrating courage and leadership in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment in dangerous environments.
