Loyola K-Kids begin eyeglasses drive

The Loyola School K-Kids Club, sponsored by the Los Altos Kiwanis Club, will attempt to set a club record during its eighth annual “Share Old Spectacles” drive. The students hope to collect more than 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses.

The K-Kids Club, made up of second- through sixth-graders, has collected more than 7,500 pairs of glasses in seven years with the help of the public and local store-owners who offered space for collection buckets.

The glasses are sent to Direct Relief International in Goleta, where they are repaired, prescriptions identified and distributed to those who need them in the U.S. and around the world.

Collection boxes are available at Loyola School, 770 Berry Ave.; the Los Altos Town Crier, 138 Main St.; and Jim Flynn’s State Farm Insurance, 4546 El Camino Real. More locations will be announced soon.

MVLA schedules parent event Jan. 10

Niobe Way, Ed.D., is scheduled to discuss “Boys and the Crisis of Connection” as part of the Los Altos-Mountain View Speaker Series 7-9 p.m. Jan 10 at Los Altos High School’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave.

The lecture will address stereotypes about boys and men as well as reveal that boys not only share their deepest secrets and feelings with their closest male friends, but also claim they would go “wacko” without them, according to Way. Yet as boys become men, she said, they become distrustful, lose these friendships and feel isolated and alone.

Way is professor of Applied Psychology in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University. She is co-director of the Center for Research on Culture, Development, and Education at NYU and president of the Society for Research on Adolescence. Way is a nationally recognized leader in the field of adolescent development and in the use of mixed methods. She has studied the social and emotional development of girls and boys for more than two decades.

The presentation, designed for parents and counselors of K-12 students, is free, but reservations are requested. To reserve a space, visit niobewaymvla.eventbrite.com.

The Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation and the Los Altos-Mountain View PTA Council co-sponsor the event.

Selpa 1 hosts lecture on mobile devices

Selpa 1 CAC, a group of parents of children with special needs, has scheduled a parent education night, “Using iPads for Special Education Teaching,” 7-9 p.m. Jan. 18 in the Covington School Multipurpose Room, 205 Covington Road, Los Altos.

The use of iPads is on the rise in special-education teaching, therapy and communication. Mobile devices are key to providing special-needs educators with lightweight, easy-to-use and affordable communication options. They also offer speech and language pathologists a motivating, innovative way to elicit speech and language from a wide variety of clients in a therapy setting.

Danielle Sampson will examine how to use the iPad in a therapy room and as a communication device. She will review a variety of applications designed for children with special needs.

The presentation is free and open to the public.
