A shoulder-widening project on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County that began April 14—and features overnight lane closures—is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Crews are widening the shoulder of the roadway for improved safety, and reinstalling rumble strips adjacent to the outside travel lane to alert travelers.

The project is on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County from about 1 mile north of Buena Vista Drive near Watsonville to the Rob Roy junction of Highway 1 and Freedom Boulevard in Aptos.

Overnight Lane Closures on Highway 1

Travelers on northbound Highway 1 may encounter an overnight closure of a single lane, Monday–Thursday from 7:30pm to 5am and Sunday from 9pm to 5am.

Travelers on southbound Highway 1 will encounter an overnight closure of a single lane, Monday–Thursday from 8:30pm to 6am and Sunday from 9pm to 6am.

One lane will always remain open during these closures.

Construction is weather dependent, and updates will be provided in advance of the scheduled start to confirm dates and hours of work.

The contractor for this $3.6 million project is Granite Rock Construction.
