The Register-Pajaronian High School Athletes of the Week for the week of Dec. 24-30.

For several local student-athletes, the last 12 months were filled with championship performances, inspirational efforts and unforgettable matchups. Some used their skills on the court, field, pool, track and trails to wow spectators, while others showcased their drive and attitude to inspire young and old.

Zacarias pinned No. 2 seed Nick Trave of Petaluma to take third at 106 pounds, while Meyers pinned No. 4 seed Isaiah Ontiveros of Pitman in the third-place match at 152 pounds.

Paloma Ramirez had 16 points and seven rebounds, Mackenzie Tellez added 13 points, eight rebounds and five steals and Monte Vista Christian completed its dominant showing in the Don & Martha Price Christmas Classic with a 74-41 win over Valley Christian-Roseville in the tournament final on Saturday in Watsonville.

Hill, a sophomore transfer from San Jose State and a Santa Cruz native, leads the state in points (24.9) and assists (4.7) per game, but managed just eight points and two assists as a result of running up against a game plan designed exclusively to stop her.

The former SCCAL Commissioner was on hand for the dedication last year, but his absence during the 50th edition of the tournament today will leave a gigantic hole in the hearts of a wrestling community so accustom to his gregarious, fun-loving personality.

The Watsonville Wildcatz are younger than usual, but the lofty yearly expectations thrusted upon the 11-time Central Coast Section champions haven’t changed.
