Watsonville graduated a pair of starters in second baseman Liyah Lopez and centerfielder Nicole Wilson — Scott’s daughter — but has been lucky enough to fill those holes with freshman Maliyah Sandin and sophomore Jazmyne Martinez, respectively. Along with those additions, the Wildcatz have also added freshman outfielders Anastacia Alba and Maya Guerrero and freshman pitcher Daisy Ortiz.

Senior Kourosh Safari repeated as the SCCAL singles champ with a grueling 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Santa Cruz High’s Jack Tierney, while the Mariners’ duo of Carter Bond and Jake Kluger breezed through Soquel High’s pair of Lincoln Cooley and Casey Valcarcel, 6-1, 6-3, for the doubles title at the Seascape Sports Club.

Watsonville freshman Isabella Alvarez was crowned the Most Valuable Player at this past weekend’s Watsonville Girls Basketball Tournament.

HS Athlete of the Week, 2/26-3/5: Dennar Ocampo, Pajaro Valley
Pajaro Valley High sophomore setter Dennar Ocampo led the Grizzlies to a pair of wins over Soledad High and Monte Vista Christian. He had 50 assists, 12 aces and six kills in the victories, which pushed P.V. to 3-0.
HS Football: St. Francis' Kovacs named MTAL-C Defensive Player of the Year
St. Francis High senior linebacker Josh Kovacs was named the Mission Trail Athletic League Coastal division’s Defensive Player of the Year, the league recently announced.
