The two people shot to death in Moss Landing early Monday morning have been identified as Marco Antonio Perez, 15, and Nathaniel Flores, 13.

Both boys were from Salinas, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2am on Nov. 2 near Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach.

Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies, California State Parks personnel and California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area.

When deputies arrived, they found two victims who were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third shooting victim arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. That person’s condition was unknown as of Monday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A fourth person was taken from the scene to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Authorities have not released the identities or ages of the two surviving victims.

“This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of two lives,” Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said in a statement Monday. “Our detectives are working to establish the circumstances surrounding what occurred. We ask anyone who may have information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist with this investigation.”

At the request of the Sheriff’s Office, California State Parks Police closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach on Monday while investigators processed the scene.

Jetty Road is a roughly half-mile paved road that branches off Highway 1 just north of the Elkhorn Slough bridge. It runs behind coastal sand dunes and ends at a parking area near the north jetty of Moss Landing Harbor.

The area is a popular destination for birdwatchers, beachgoers and visitors to the Monterey Bay coastline.

Investigators have not said what led to the shooting or whether any suspects have been identified.

The Sheriff’s Office said Monday afternoon that there was no active threat to the Moss Landing community.

The investigation remains ongoing.
