A California Highway Patrol officer takes a Watsonville man into custody after he was found with an illegal firearm.

A Watsonville man was arrested for possession an illegal gun early Sunday morning following a traffic stop by the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officer Israel Murillo said officers on patrol in Santa Cruz made a traffic stop on a Mercedes for a vehicle code violation. Upon searching the car, officers found a loaded unregistered firearm inside the vehicle.

The firearm belonged to a 22-year-old passenger from Watsonville, who was arrested and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.

No names have been released, and the incident is still under investigation.
