Day of remembrance

Today is Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the U.S. designed to honor and mourn military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces. It also marks the unofficial start of summer in the U.S.

Travel is at an all-time low this holiday weekend, officials at AAA said. There is a heat advisory in effect and forecasters say it will hang around into Thursday. Inland highs today will be around 90 degrees with low 80s along the coast. Some inland temps could top 100 into the week. Meanwhile, 3-8 inches of snow fell in Denver as a massive cold front tumbled through that section of The Rockies over the weekend and into Memorial Day.

The CHP is in its maximum enforcement period over the holiday, focusing on speeding, partying and DUIs.

In California 47 of 58 counties are in Phase 2 of coronavirus precautions, meaning they have permission to open some stores, with curbside service. Some of those counties, including San Benito, are allowing restaurants to feature limited seating. Carmel has allowed dining at outdoor tables.

There are 1,643,494 cases of Covid-19 in the U.S. with 97,722 deaths. California reports 94,257 cases with 3,756 deaths.

A massive fire blew through a warehouse at Pier 45 in the Fisherman’s Wharf area of San Francisco Saturday. The 4:15am blaze drew more than 120 firefighters. Flames tore through a historic concrete building used for fish processing and for storage of nets and crab pots. Fire officials deemed the building a complete loss.

There was also a 40-acre wildland fire near Soledad Sunday. The fire forced the evacuation of dozens of people, but that order was canceled after firefighters got a quick handle on the fire the same day. A fire official said the fire was triggered by a spark from a mower blade.

The first manned space mission since 2011 is about to hurl two men into outer space. The historic launch by SpaceX and NASA will send Bob Hurley and Ben Behnken in the SpaceX Dragon capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket to International Space Station.
